Self Analysis

Throughout my entire research process I have tried to be as unbiased as possible, researching both sides of the binary issue of stem cell research. I have provided information about the pros and cons and general facts concerning embryonic stem cell research; however it is difficult to completely put all personal bias aside when presenting such information on a controversial topic. I am personally in favor of embryonic stem cell research as a whole, and feel even though presenting both arguments, I have found that I have argued more for the supporters. I believe that an embryo is not considered human until it has successfully attached to a woman’s uterus. This being said I don’t think using embryonic stem cells before this occurs is killing human life. Many eggs become fertilized, but do not successfully implant into a woman’s uterus to develop into a child. I believe it is ethical to use excess embryos from in vetro fertilization treatments that would otherwise be discarded. I also believe using embryonic stem cells is more of an advantage than using adult human stem cells. Embryonic stem cells offer researchers more of an opportunity to manipulate the cell into any other type of cell to work with.
I have found federal funding to be a big issue concerning the advancement of stem cell research. Like I have previously stated, the upcoming 2008 election will impact the federal funding debate. I think if a democrat is elected, federal funding will be made available for research. This will increase the rate at which scientists will be able to research since they will be able to obtain the needed material and equipment using the money provided.
Through my research I have found that stem cell research is advancing at a rapid pace, and even though there is yet to be a cure found, we are on the right track to do so in the near future. Since testing on animals is already proven itself successful, as shown with the works of Oliver Smithies, the UNC professor who just recently won the Nobel Peace Prize, testing and achievement with humans is the next advancement to occur. Within the next couple of decades I believe all of the scientists’ research will have led to cures in diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, along with successful cell transplants. All testing and research is worth the time, effort and money for searching for cures to help the human race.

I agree completely with the stance you have taken on stem cell research. I like that you have thouroughly looked at both sides of the arguement and come to a reasonable conclusion. I would, however, like to know how you feel about the moral issue of not helping people who are in need of a cure. When does it become a moral issue when we do not use available technology to cure someone who is seriously ill? I think this is a debate researchers and politicians should look at, and it would likely change the minds of many opposed to stem cell research. Overall, great analysis; I have enjoyed your blog!

I agree with what you have stated to a certain extent. as long as the cells are taken after we know they will no produce a baby then yes they should be used. i also believe that as long as the cells are used just for disease based issues and not human cloning then we should use it. i think that it will be great to find cures for diseases which you have stated and if using stem cells will result into this i believe we should use them. altogether you have presented a very good unbiased entries and presented what you truly believe greatly, and i agree with you.

Since I'm writing about stem cell research also, I completely relate to what you have learned. I have also tried to avoid being biased. There's a huge difference between being biased and making a stand on what you believe is right, and I think you've done a great job taking a stand. I really admire the fact that you bring up the 2008 election. I just mentioned this election not too long ago and I realize that this election will determine whether or whether not stem cell research will advance quickly or slowly. I also like the fact that you've presented the pros and cons of both embryonic and adult stem cells.
I've certainly grown as a thinker when writing about stem cell research, and part of growing is listening to other people. I'm going to be completely honest when I say, your blog is a creditable source when exploring stem cell research. Being an advocate to stem cell research, I really do hope this experimentation advances so people can have cures to many diseases.
Thank you for providing me with a good source.

In response to tarheelborn50:
I feel that if we have the technology and available resources to help people who are in need of a cure, then it would be immoral for humans not to take advantage of these resources to try and help. We should take every step possible to try and help others who are suffering, especially if we already have the methods to do so. The question of morality is definitely a question researchers and politicians should take into consideration. That is a good point to bring up. I’m glad you have enjoyed my blog.

I agree with your conclusions. Government issues aside, I believe that stem cell research is good for the human race. The bottom line is:

Any limits governments place on scientific research can only halt progress in finding cures to diseases.

If we only allow scientists to research certain diseases or only perform certain types of testing, how will we find the needed cures? Who wants to look a dying family member in the eye knowing that scientists were not "allowed" to properly research cures for their disease.
